Kashmir is a state in northern India, known for its beautiful nature and cool climate. It is India's answer to Switzerland, surrounded by beautiful lakes, rich flora and rich boating in the form of canoes and houseboats in Dhal lake. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is divided between India, Pakistan and China. Ever since its liberation in 1947, there has been conflict over the region. India administers 43% of the region and Pakistan 37%, while China claims the Shaksam valley and Akai Chin. There have been four wars between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, with constant curfews and unrest. I actually couldn't find any information confirming that it is safe to travel there, but a request has been sent to the Indian embassy!
India is a fascinating union of diversity, for travel experiences it is called the incredible India. In 1989, Sunil, my husband, and I were there on our honeymoon. I was so curious about this state that I had read a lot about. Since it is a conflict-ridden area and there is constant unrest there, it was a bit scary that we were going there. Several older relatives warned against traveling there, but fortunately we had no unpleasant experiences or witnessed any unrest. We did see some soldiers walking around the streets with guns on their backs, several European tourists were to be seen and we got to talk to several Germans, among others. When it comes to food and food tradition, more dried spices are used than fresh herbs due to the climate. The food is milder and different in taste than dishes we know as Indian here at home. Rogan josh, on the other hand, is a very famous dish from this cuisine. Milk is often added to stews to add more flavor. Goat's milk is used most often, it is thick and has a strong flavor.
Since the climate is cool, woolen clothes are widely used and they have a special form of embroidery. You have probably heard of good quality cashmere scarves, shawls and sweaters? Do you know why cashmere garments are more expensive than other woolen garments? The reason is that they are made from fine goat wool which provides excellent insulation and is said to be three times warmer than regular sheep wool. The type is also softer, lighter, stronger and finer than regular wool. Primarily large silver jewelry, but also gold and diamonds decorated with precious stones are characteristics of women from Kashmir (like the picture).
