Panir is the famous cheese from the state of Punjab. Most people love it very much. If you don't have it , you can make it yourself or use tofu, without any comparison. This is how I make it with my tasty tandoori paste .
Normally you can use any kind of marinade like for chicken, but paneer is quite tasteless and I therefore think it can be seasoned a little stronger. A little sprinkle of lime juice and you have a super tasty vegetarian variant ready. The skewer is even better with some vegetables and then the peppers are both colorful and tasty. Otherwise you can use mushrooms, squash, potatoes, broccoli etc.
If you compare cheese with paneer, there is more protein in cheese 18g per 100g, but paneer provides 11g. The same applies to the calcium content even though both are dairy products. On the other hand, there is much more fat in cheese (18g saturated fat and 100mg cholesterol) while in paneer there is 1.7g saturated fat and only 17mg cholesterol.
I love both, but I definitely choose paneer over cheese. If you want a slightly richer marinade, you can use 4 tablespoons of yogurt or sour cream. Then you don't need oil. Here is my composition:
TANDOORI PANIR SKEWERS
100 g paneer
100 g bell pepper or other vegetables to taste
2 tablespoons tandoori paste
1 tablespoon oil
Lime or lemon juice before serving
Procedure:
- Soak the skewers for about 30 minutes.
- Cut the paneer and vegetables into large cubes.
- Mix tandoori paste and oil. Spread everything over the vegetables with your hands or in a plastic bag. Make sure the paneer pieces do not crumble.
- Thread onto skewers and roast in foil for about 10 minutes (or in the oven at 200 degrees).
- Sprinkle a little lime juice on top before serving.
- Serve tempting skewers with handmade naan in tandoor , lime chutney , basmati rice , papadam and raita .
