Indian old wives' advice in the cold – Besan ka doodh

Hurray! I say, the snow is finally here, but it just doesn't have to stay until April. Come for a quick visit in December to February and we will have spring. I have to admit that after 39 years in Norway it is strange when there is no snow on Christmas Eve. It is much cleaner with snow, as long as you don't have to shovel, slide on the slippery road and scratch the windows of the car, etc.

IMG_5991 Snow and sub-zero temperatures bring with them flu and colds. Here's a tip that I know works. In Hindi it's called besan ka doodh which means milk with chickpea flour. I think I can see you making a face because it doesn't sound tempting, but it's actually very good, filling and not least very healthy. I don't think a winter has gone by without my children having this delicious drink a couple of times. It can be made without turmeric, but if you have an infection, cold or fever it's a good idea to have it in. Be careful with too much turmeric, it makes it bitter in taste so don't have a spoon full.

For 3 servings you need:

4-5 teaspoons ghee

40 gr chickpea flour (own advertising)

3/4 -1 tsp turmeric – can be omitted

15 g almonds

6 dl low-fat milk

6 teaspoons brown sugar

IMG_5978 Procedure:

Heat ghee on medium heat, add chickpea flour and stir to prevent it from burning at the bottom. After 3-4 minutes, add coarsely crushed almonds, milk and sugar. Switch to whisk and bring the milk to a boil.

Drink warm, served with a spoon in the cup to enjoy the almonds.

Get well soon!
